Rembrandt lighting

What is it?
Lighting technique that studio portrait photographers use. uses one light and a reflector, or two lights.
Why use it?
Photographers like it because, it is capable of producing images which appear both natural and compelling with a minimum of equipment. Rembrandt lighting is characterized by an illuminated triangle under the eye of the subject on the less illuminated side of the face.
How is it set up?
  1. Put your light on a stand and raise it so that it’s just above the models head.
  2. Set up a reflector, which is serving as a fill light, by placing it on the opposite side of the model.
  3. The camera should be placed midway between the fill light and key light. With the model standing so that she is facing the key light, have her rotate her head to look at the camera.

Here are some of the pictures that this photographer has on their flickr. I really like how he did the spider on the web image. i think it is really creative and put a lot of work into it. I also really like the light waves on the door. I like how i looks like a fence, but it cant be really seen. I think it means something strong.

Rineke Dijkstra

Rineke is a photographer from the Netherlands who has a series on portraits of growing adolescents on the beach. Dijkstra takes low perspective images and  uses the relationship between the content and viewer to bring this uncomfortable feeling to us. Her intent is to make the viewer and the subject uncomfortable with each other. I think that through these images she is trying to make us feel this awkwardness that these kids are feeling. This is kind of like a brief look into how weird and awkward growing up really is. She takes these images on a windy beach, while her subjects pose in a weird and awkward manner. Honestly if this was me posing in front of a camera on a windy day while in a bathing suit, i would look awkward as well. My favorite image from hers is the last one, the one of the girl with the very dark hair in the stripped bathing suit. Her expression mixed with her uncomfortable body position further wraps the entire intent that this series is about. I like how she does something different, instead of doing normal portraits of kids on beaches/

Second chance at: HDR's
For my second chance assignment i will be redoing the HDR final assignment. last semester I did not finish the assignment last semester. I started the assignment, but procrastinated and I ended up not turning in anything. So now that we have a second chance to redo an assignment, i'm going to take the opportunity to redo something that was super important and i failed to get it done. I'm going to do my HDR's on cars. Last semester i tried doing the same, but this semester i am going to attempt it again, but with better skills. here are some of my first HDR's (not a series):

Here are my new HDR's: I decided to redo the assignment and take some pictures of cars. I love HDR images of cars because i love the way that cars reflect the sunlight. I think they make for great HDR's.

Pencil for free speech
At school we stated a thing called pencil for free speech. At the library there is a table set up where you take a pencil or pen and set it down for free speech. Nearby there are posters hanging up describing the events that took place in Paris last week. We hope that more and more people get informed of what happened and stand up for what is right.
Very brief summary:  Last Wednesday two men entered the Charlie Hebdo building in Paris (satirical magazine), and shoot and killed a dozen cartoonist who worked in the building. The attack was a terrorist attack, and the men knew exactly who they were to kill.
STAND UP FOR FREE SPEECH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
